Mineral Analysis
DuneLabs undertakes mineral analysis in Perth in Western Australia.
Our laboratory provides the following services to the mining and exploration industries;
- DIAMONDS - Mineralogy, Interpretation
- HEAVY MINERAL SANDS - Sizing, Analysis, MIneralogy
- GEOCHEMISTRY - Indicator Mineral Identification
Below is a brief procedural outline of our analysis techniques with regard to diamond sampling.
Indicator Mineral Observation
Charges relate to standard fractions, ie. observation of -0.7+0.4mm (coarse) and -0.4+0.2mm (fine) grain size ranges. Observe 4gm of coarse and 2gm of fine HMC in total. HMC will be observed from each of the 10 magnetic fractions.
Up to 50 grains are removed for SEM observation and X-ray scanning. Sample mineralogy is recorded on a Result Sheet. All indicator minerals will be counted and abundances of other minerals estimated. Work in excess of 4gm+2gm will be charged on a pro-rata basis by arrangement. Charge rate: $187.50 per sample. If only the coarse fraction is required, the charge rate will be less.
EDS Analysis (Optional)
After X-ray scan, the best possibilities are sent to a probe mount for each sample. The 25mm mount (holding 70 grains) is polished ($50) carbon-coated ($10). After scanning, grains of merit are analysed. Grains are analysed using 60-second counts by ASEM. Eight elements are measured simultaneously. Precision is 0.2 wt%. Charge Rate: $7.50 per analysis.
Reporting (Optional)
Diamond indicator minerals are described in terms of standard fields. The reporting procedure involves the generation of computer plots and their interpretation. Other indicator minerals (i.e. for gold or base metals) are also identified. Brief comments are provided on the implications of wear of high-ranking grains and the significance of species mix in terms of provenance. The comprehensive report includes up to three pages of text and diagrams. The work is carried out monthly or by batch or as requested. Charge rate: $225.
We can arrange for HF fusion of concentrates, observe the HF residues and issue a diamond certificate for each stone. Each diamond will be confirmed by X-ray scan.
Microprobing of grains can be undertaken if required. The minimum cost is $1000 per day. Specialised tests can be carried out on selected fractions, i.e. UV irradiation of non-mags with fluorescent grains being confirmed by X-ray scan where appropriate. We have range of base and precious metal indicator mineral routines and would be pleased to discuss applications with clients.
We are associated with Perth's premier mineral dressing laboratory, Diamond Recovery Services Pty Ltd. We offer a range of grain counting services for our own clients.
